ITXAS-ALDE DANTZA TALDEA

BASQUE FOLK GROUP

The Itxas-Alde roup was founded in 1972. At present, it has 100 members, all of them young.

From the begining, Itxas-Alde has devoted itself to studying and disseminating the Basque culture and has had, at different times, both a choral and a theatre group. Today, its principal activity is the study and dissemination of Basque dances and songs.

Itxas-Alde has a repertoroire of 100 different dances from different areas of the Country, and uses for its perfomances both traditional Basque folklore instruments as well as instruments incorporated from other cultures.

Apart from performing in Bakio, its place of origin, Itxas-Alde performs in many festivals in the Basque Country both on its own and with other group.

Another of Itxas-Alde's objectives is to gain knowledge of other cultures through cultural exchanges and to that end, Itxas-Alde started to organize, in 1991, an annual festival in Bakio. It invites groups from different parts of the world to participate and returns their visits.

Since then, Itxas-Alde has contribuited to extend the knowledge of the basque culture to places such as Portugal, France, Catalonia, Russia, Turkey Italy, Argentina, Bulgary,  Scotland, Poland and Costa Rica.
